Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 250°C (conventional oven).
  • Cut a crisscross pattern on top of each roll. Be careful not to slice them all the way through.
  • Mix butter with grated cheese, rosemary, and garlic. Distribute the butter mixture into the cuts on the rolls.
  • Bake in the middle of the oven for 4-5 minutes.
Enjoy!
Tip

Do you often have leftover bread rolls from dinner? Then this recipe is just what you need. Leftover bread is ideal for this recipe, as it is drier than fresh bread, which makes it perfect for soaking up the gooey, melty cheese and the many flavours from the cheese mixture. Use your bread rolls from last night's dinner to create something new and delicious.

Tip

You can also use loaves instead of rolls, for example, a big loaf of sourdough bread or a classic white bread. With the grid pattern, it will still be easy to pull apart, just like the small rolls.

Ingredients

Small bread rolls
4
Butter, room temperature
50 g
Grated cheddar cheese
200 g
Fresh rosemary, finely chopped
1 tsp
Clove of garlic, pressed

Enjoy the simplicity of stuffed bread with cheese

This stuffed cheese bread is an effortless, perfect combination of simplicity and indulgence. The outer crust bakes to a perfect golden brown with a satisfying crunch, while it is soft and tender on the inside with melted cheese. The subtle sharpness of cheddar blends beautifully with the mild, buttery bread. When you enjoy it warm from the oven, you get the best, indulgent feeling of gooey cheese and a flavourful, melded sensation of cheddar, rosemary and garlic.

Easy pull-apart bread with a grid pattern

These stuffed bread rolls are scored in a grid pattern before baking. This ensures you can easily pull apart each piece and reveal the steamy, aromatic layers inside, offering you bread, cheese, flavourful rosemary, and garlic in one bite. It also ensures the cheese mixture gets further into the bread instead of laying only on the crust.

The easy pull-apart feature makes it ideal for sharing or simply breaking apart for delightful mouthfuls of cheesy bread for soups, salads, or other meals. Use it for a lovely snack or serve it with, for example, tomato and lentil soup or a cheesy cauliflower gratin on the side of grilled chicken or vegetables.

Savour the richness of butter, rosemary, garlic, and cheese

Combining butter, rosemary, garlic, and cheese creates a rich tapestry of flavours and textures. Butter serves as the base, lending the bread a moist, tender texture and a rich, creamy flavour that sets the stage for the other ingredients. Rosemary provides a piney fragrance, which infuses the bread with a subtle, herbal crispness. To contrast these flavours, garlic gives a mild heat and pungency that cuts through the richness, adding depth and complexity to each bite. The melted cheddar cheese binds these flavours with its savoury, gooey goodness, giving you an irresistible creamy garlic cheese bread.

Get creative with the filling

The filling is everything in this bread, which is easy to experiment with. Go for a pizza-inspired filling with bacon or sausage, adding a salty, meaty flavour that pairs beautifully with the cheese. You can also incorporate fresh basil or a sprinkle of dried oregano, bringing classic Italian pizza flavours.

Get creative with tomatoes. Their juiciness complements the crispiness of the bread and melds well with the richness of the cheese. Add onion for a sweet or sharp flavour, depending on how they are prepared, using thinly sliced or diced onions. You can also mix in mushrooms for an earthy undertone and a delicious, almost creamy, texture when mixed with the cheese and butter. Before adding them to the cheese mixture, you should fry or caramelise the onions and mushrooms.

To add a burst of colour and a fresh, herbal note, sprinkle fresh parsley to cut through the richness.
