Choose fresh vegetables

Fresh vegetables retain their natural sweetness and crunch better than other types of veggies. Opt for firm, brightly coloured sweet peppers and crisp shallots or onions to ensure they hold up well during cooking.

Use a cast-iron frying pan

You can achieve the perfect sear on your steak using a cast-iron frying pan or a grill pan. Preheat your frying-pan until it is very hot before adding the steak. The meat will develop a delicious, flavourful crust similar to grilling, while remaining juicy and tender inside.

Marinate overnight

Use zip-top bags to marinate the steak and vegetables separately overnight. By doing this, you make sure the veggies and meat are coated evenly. Refrigerate the marinated ingredients overnight to allow flavours to meld and deepen. It also makes the meat more tender.

FAQ: Questions about steak fajitas

We answer some of the most frequently asked questions about preparing steak fajitas, from choosing the right meat to cooking it the best way.

What are the best steak cuts for making fajitas?

Entrecôte, or ribeye, is a fantastic choice if you are looking to make some really delicious fajitas. Thanks to its beautiful marbling, it cooks up tender and full of flavour. Just remember to slice it thinly against the grain to keep it nice and tender. If you are open to other options, skirt steak and flank steak are also excellent choices. They are a bit more traditional, absorb marinades wonderfully, and cook up quickly.

How do I cook the steak perfectly?

For tender and flavourful fajitas, cook the steak over high heat either on a grill or in a hot frying pan. Aim for 3–5 minutes per side for a nice sear while keeping the inside juicy. After cooking, let it rest for a few minutes to allow the juices to settle, then slice it thinly against the grain to ensure each bite is tender and packed with flavour.  To achieve medium-rare, cook it for about 3–4 minutes per side, depending on the thickness of the meat. If you prefer the meat more done, 4–5 minutes per side should do it. Avoid overcooking, as it can lead to tougher, drier slices.

How should I store and reheat leftover steak fajitas?

To store leftover steak fajitas, let them cool to room temperature before sealing them in an airtight container. You can keep the assembled fajitas in the fridge for up to 5 days. If you have not yet assembled the fajitas, we recommend you store the dip, guacamole, and filling separately in the fridge to keep their textures intact. For storage beyond that, freeze the filling in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Once you are ready to reheat the fajitas, thaw them in the fridge overnight. Then, microwave the filling for 1 to 2 minutes until hot throughout.

Juicy slices of steak marinated with warm and spicy flavours

Marinating the steak is part of the tradition of fajitas. Doing so breaks down the meat, making it juicier and more delicate when cooked. Ingredients like Worcestershire sauce, cumin, and chilli powder tenderise the meat while imbuing it with warm, spicy notes.

We have added Worcestershire sauce for a touch of tang and umami. Throw the steak on the pan and hear the welcoming sizzle as the crust sears, sealing in the mouthwatering juices. Slice the meat against the grain and fill your tortillas with succulent strips of steak.

With homemade guacamole and cream cheese dip

Get the right creamy filling with our homemade guacamole and cream cheese dip. The guacamole is prepared with avocado, lime, and garlic. Its beloved creamy, buttery texture adds a layer of decadence.

The creamy cheese dip offers tangy and spicy flavours from tomatoes and jalapeño. These dips add bravura and gusto to the fajitas, binding together the savoury steak and crisp vegetables.

Delight in a simple Tex-Mex meal for the ultimate fiesta night

Fajitas originate from Tex-Mex cuisine, a mix of Texan and Mexican traditions for warm, tasty dishes. So, bring tradition into your home and cook steak fajitas for the ultimate fiesta night.

Historically, they were made with tougher cuts of meat, which were marinated and grilled over open flames. Now, Tex-Mex tradition usually involves inviting friends and family over for a big, delicious meal. Allow your guests to mix and match the fillings and toppings they desire, while enjoy good company.

Explore other ingredients

Steak fajitas offer limitless opportunities for experimentation, so put your own spin on this Tex-Mex dish.

To add a smoky flavour to your fajitas, try using roasted poblano peppers or charred onions. Roasting the poblano peppers makes them sweeter and adds a smoky taste that goes well with the savoury steak. Charred onions add a slight bitterness that enhances the earthy taste of the vegetables.

Enrich your fajitas by trying different toppings. Pickled red onions add a tangy touch, and crumbled queso fresco or white cheese brings a salty, creamy flavour.

Adding corn salsa, different cheeses, and a squeeze of lime can make the fajitas taste and look better. For a heartier version, you could add black beans or refried beans, which are popular Tex-Mex choices.
