Tips

For the best finger sandwiches, choose your favourite bread type. Make sure you can slice it thinly and is strong enough to hold the fillings. The most used types of bread are white bread, whole wheat bread, or crustless bread. Also, as a little side note, have a sharp knife at your service. That way, cutting finger sandwiches into smaller pieces should be no problem.

Tips

A tea sandwich or a mini sandwich is, indeed, made to be small and meant to be eaten in a single bite. While we know the filling is delicious, we suggest you keep an eye on not overfilling your sandwiches. That allows the bread to contain the filling easily, making them much easier to eat and pack for a picnic, for example.

What is a finger sandwich?

In short, a finger sandwich is a normal-sized sandwich cut into crustless pieces. Sometimes, they are also called a tea sandwich or a mini sandwich, and they are stuffed with filling and served as a light snack or appetiser for summer parties or sunny picnics. You can easily experiment with tastes and flavours, but we recommend our shrimp and creamy garlic cheese filling with herbs and lemon juice – it is equally delicious and delightful!

How to make finger sandwiches?

Finger sandwiches come in handy when wanting to make a light and refreshing appetiser for large groups of people. They are incredibly easy – just know that you make them the day before serving. Mix cream cheese with sour cream and add olive oil, lemon juice, mint, salt, and pepper. Add padded dry shrimp, small-diced cucumber, and podded peas to the filling and mix it well. Assemble the sandwiches, wrap them, and put them in the fridge for 24 hours. For serving, cut off the edges with a sharp knife and divide each sandwich into 4. Serve with prawns and peas on top.

How many finger sandwiches per person?

Our finger sandwich recipe makes 12 sandwiches. As a rule of thumb, count on approx. 3-4 finger sandwiches per person. However, it depends on what you serve with them or after. If you serve them with other picnic foods such as salads, quiches, skewers, bread, etc., you might only need 1-2 per person, but if you only have a few sides or snacks, 3-4 will be better. So, consider how much you serve with or after the sandwiches to decide on how many you need to make for your guests.

How to cut finger sandwiches?

The most common way to cut a finger sandwich is to make it regular-sized, then cut off the crust, and cut it into smaller squares. Cut, for example, each into four squares. You can also make them slightly bigger, cutting each into two triangles or halves. No matter how you cut them, cut off the crusts first, and remember to have a sharp knife by your side so they will be evenly and beautifully cut.

How to keep finger sandwiches fresh?

There are a few ways to keep finger sandwiches fresh in the fridge. Once you have assembled your sandwiches, wrap them in plastic or place them in an airtight container and put them in the fridge. That way, the finger sandwiches are kept cool and fresh for when you want them served. If you bring them on a picnic, store them in a cooler with ice packs or the like.

Creamy garlic cream cheese filling with herbs and lemon juice

To add another dimension of freshness, the perfectly tangy garlic cream cheese filling is mixed with fresh herbs and lemon juice. In doing so, the filling feels like a fresh flavour bomb inside your mouth, hitting your taste buds with refreshing and savoury tastes well-suited for the warm weather. The lime juice gives the cream cheese filling fruity and zesty nuances, and this combination of garlic cream cheese filling brings out the best in the shrimp, allowing its sunny summer vibes a moment in the spotlight.

Experiment with the filling

If you are considering a mini sandwich platter, you can easily mix and match the sandwich filling to serve up some different options. Try a touch of vinegar or a bit more lemon juice in the cream cheese filling to give a more acidic taste, and if you want it sweeter, consider adding diced roasted peppers.

You can also go with a shrimp and avocado combination. Mash a ripe avocado until smooth and add a bit of lemon juice, salt, pepper, and paprika or maybe even cayenne. Add shrimp, and a bit of mayonnaise for a creamier consistency, and then mix it. Slice as you would any other finger sandwich and serve with a single fresh shrimp on top. It is also a creamy, dreamy combination that fits picnics and summer parties all the same.

Remember, with a finger sandwich platter, you can try all the flavour combinations your heart desires. Mix and match and go crazy.
