Dulce de leche is a delicious and creamy confection, which is super easy to make yourself. You need only water and a can of sweetened condensed milk – it does not get easier than that! With a smooth texture and caramel-like flavour, it is the most delightful way to touch up your sweet treats, be it ice cream, milkshakes, or cakes, or even filled chocolates. Of course, no one will judge you if you simply take a spoon and dig in; it is that delicious!

Instructions

  • Open the can of condensed milk and pour it into a glass jar with a lid. Put rubber bands on and fasten the lid so the glass is airtight or tighten the lid, depending on what kind of glass jar you use.
  • Bring the water to a boil in a pot and boil the jar with condensed milk in water for 4 hours.
  • Allow the jar to cool before opening.
  • Beat the caramel with a hand mixer to a soft consistency.

Using a glass jar makes it easier to check the condensed milk and see whether it has reached the right consistency and colour – some like it darker than others, and maybe you want a thicker consistency, so you want to keep and eye on that and keep boiling it until it reaches the right consistency.

If it gets lumpy, it is a sign that it may be overcooked, but there is an easy way to fix it. To get a smooth texture, pour the sauce into a blender or food processor and pulse until it has the desired consistency. The caramel-like treat should be smooth and spreadable, but if it seems too thick while it is still warm, you can add a tiny bit of warm milk or cream and beat it with a mixer. You can also just boil the container, that holds the condensed milk. Only boil It for 3,5 hours then.
