While there’s nothing wrong with serving the waffles whole in the classic way, there are a number of fun alternative options to present them with that freshen up the dish. Try cutting the waffles into churro-like finger slices and dipping them in chocolate sauce with cinnamon for example, or of you want a real sweet kick, stack them with a melted marshmallow filling in-between to create waffle smores.
There are an endless number of ways to top waffles, ranging from nut butters, fruit and greek yogurt, to more indulgent varieties like cold vanilla ice cream, caramel syrup, and the classic Nutella and strawberry or banana combination. Savoury toppings are also an option – feel free to experiment.
When it comes to drinks, it’s best to avoid anything too sweet. A strong cup of coffee helps to enhance the chocolate flavour in a pleasing way. You also can’t go wrong with a glass of cold milk, a classic pairing that will make you feel like a kid again!
The best waffles are fresh waffles, but they can be kept for a few days before going dry. Refrigerate within a couple hours once the waffles have cooled, and keep in an airtight container. We recommend eating the waffles within three days.
