Our farms

We are the first dairy company in the UK to include the operations of our supplying farmers in our environment strategy, recognising that up to 80 per cent of our total supply chain emissions are generated at farm level.

To address this key area, we launched an industry-leading programme of on-farm support for our farmers. On-farm practical workshops have been held all over the country to guide farmers through the key areas that influence carbon outputs.

We think this is a huge opportunity for members to get involved because not only is it good for the environment, it makes good business sense. Following the initial project, a sustainable dairy farming programme of events is in the process of being rolled out.

Water use is essential in our processes and for cleaning our sites to ensure the highest possible quality product. We have signed up to reduce water consumption at all our dairies as part of the Federation House Commitment.

We have also made significant investment in energy efficiency with the widespread use of variable speed drives and voltage optimisation. We are confident that by taking a holistic view to waste we can we re-use or recycle as much of the remaining waste as possible. The majority of Arla's sites are zero waste to landfill.

Gas and electricity consumption contributes a significant proportion of our carbon footprint within our dairy operations which is why we employ management systems specifically developed to reflect the individual circumstances at each of our sites

Arla UK 360 programme

The Arla UK 360 programme covers the six areas essential to building a profitable, responsible dairy farm business. It incorporates best practice in today's dairy farming across animal health and welfare, people development, environment and natural resources, community engagement and economic resilience and reinvestment.

It is a vision of how we help drive sustainable businesses for UK dairy farmers, and continues the journey of our owners in driving a sustainable business, as stewards of the countryside and a critical part of UK food production.
