Too many school kids in the UK start their day hungry

School isn’t easy at the best of times, so imagine having to face it on an empty stomach. Maths can feel like rocket science and science can feel like a marathon. Classrooms should be filled with smiling faces, not empty stomachs.

So, Arla Cravendale is teaming up with the incredible Magic Breakfast charity to ensure every child gets the breakfast they need to start happy and stay focused.

More milk to more mornings

We’re proud to help Magic Breakfast support thousands of school children across the UK with over 950,000 donated Cravendale milk vouchers. That’s enough for almost 9.5 million bowls of cereal!

Magic meets science

Milk provides essential nutrients for children such as protein, calcium and iodine along with vitamins B2, B12 as well as potassium and phosphorous. This nutrition is crucial for a child’s development and well being.

“I used to go to class hungry all the time and it became the norm for me, until I moved to a magic breakfast supported school. I want every child in the same position I was a few years ago to benefit from it too.” Rowan, 15, Magic Breakfast Youth Campaigner

In the last six months 2.5 million children, just like Rowan, have been at risk of hunger living in households experiencing food insecurity, yet the Government still has no plans to make breakfast part of the country’s National Food Strategy.  Join Arla Cravendale in #Backingbreakfast to ensure that changes for good.

Ensuring no child is at a disadvantage due to lack of food is critical. I believe they all deserve a healthy, productive start to their day. Breakfast provisions in schools guarantee that children are never too hungry to learn.

The idea of a child going to school too hungry to learn is something I find deeply upsetting, and shouldn’t be happening anywhere, especially in the 5th largest economy in the world.

Attempting to thrive in education while being deprived of something as simple as a breakfast is a barrier I am too familiar with. Breakfast is key for a child’s development, creating a productive start to a challenging day in school.

A nutritious breakfast removes barriers to education and gives children a chance to break out of the currents of poverty. School breakfasts act as an anchor to keep children in education and families in poverty afloat.
